This was a fun assignment. We made proportional symbol maps showing Europe's wine consumption in 2005. Each symbol increases in size in direct proportion to the amount of wine consumed. The radius of the circle is determined by calculating the square root value of the data being displayed and using that number in the following formula: symbol size = max symbol size multiplied by the quotient of the sq root value and the maximum value. Thank goodness for excel. I should say even with excel, I hope I got the symbols sizes right!
Things I would have done differently:

1. Since the scale bar and text is in metrics, the legend should also be represented that way too....liters instead of gallons.
2. Make another inset for Crotia, Slovania and Austria.
